If you need to solve advanced mathematical exercises, Octave is highly recommended. The disadvantage is that you can that you may need to invest some time in learning. If you do not have much knowledge of mathematics or at least basic knowledge of programming commands, it can be difficult. Its interface is not very friendly but, fortunately, the program has a good manual support can always turn to when in doubt.
