And you can not only make totally reliable and quickly numerical operations using real or complex numbers, vectors, intervals and matrices: with the powerful computer algebra system Maxima you also have symbolic algebra and rational arithmetic in your hands. Both systems work together perfectly, so you only have to learn syntax.
